I read Dario Amodei's latest essay right after Davos.

Then I read it again. (Read it if you haven’t done it yet).

And then I thought about my teenager.

Amodei is the CEO of Anthropic, the company behind Claude, one of the most influential AI companies in the world. His essay is called "The Adolescence of Technology"

I know him as an optimist, that's why his central claim stopped me cold: AI could disrupt 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs within one to five years.

Not decades. Years.

That timeline lands right in the middle of my son’s career journey, he will probably just start university by then. And chances are, that this prediction is just as valid for your child’s or your team members’ child’s life. 

He uses the metaphor of adolescence, because adolescents have enormous energy and capability. But they do not always have the wisdom or governance to use it well.

That is where we are with AI right now, Amodei claims. We have built something powerful. And we are still figuring out how to handle it, and its consequences.

I felt a mix of concern, curiosity, and hope reading his words. I imagine you might feel the same. So let us unpack what this means for us.

 


 

The Adolescence of Technology

 

Amodei's essay is long, but a few points stand out for anyone navigating leadership and career decisions today.

First, he describes this as a rite of passage. We are in an adolescent phase of AI development where power arrives before we have the governance and wisdom to handle it. The technology is maturing faster than our institutions.

Second, he warns of imminent disruption. He suggests that AI systems capable of outperforming humans across disciplines could emerge within one to two years. And up to half of entry-level jobs may be displaced within five years. At Davos, some CEOs disagreed with his timeline. But the direction is hard to argue with.

Third, he calls for a sober, realistic approach. This is not doomerism. Amodei advocates for evidence-based action: voluntary steps by companies to manage risks. He believes we can navigate this phase if we act with intention.

And that’s where I really agree, managing risk is what we can do, everyone at their own level.

So what does this mean for you? It is not a reason to panic. It is a call to invest in human skills and purposeful development. The question is: how are you preparing your organisation and your family for rapid change?

What Is Really Holding You Back
